| Abstract: As required under the Clean Air Act, the periodic review of the national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter (PM) is now underway. The fourth external review draft of the "Air Quality Criteria for Particulate Matter" (AQCD) was released in June 2003, and reviewed at a meeting of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) in August 2003. The Criteria Document compiles and evaluates new scientific information regarding the health and environmental effects of airborne PM. The Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards prepares the Staff Paper to evaluate the policy implications of the key scientific and technical inforamtion contained in the AQCD for PM and to identify critical elements that EPA staff believes should be considered in the review of the PM NAAQS. EPA is now releasing the first draft of the PM Staff Paper for public and peer review; this document will be reviewed at a CASAC meeting in November 2003. This draft Staff Paper includes staff's initial assessments of the policy-relevant scientific and technical information contained in the draft AQCD, various staff analyses and the initial PM health risk assessment, and preliminary staff conclusions and recommendations on the PM NAAQS. After the CASAC meeting in November, OAQPS staff will prepare a second draft Staff Paper, based on the final revised AQCD and taking into account CASAC and public comments received on this first draft. |
