EPA begins drilling relief well into Leadville tunnel
5/14-- EPA contractors began drilling a well into a large volume of water
trapped underground in the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel today. Once completed,
the well will be fitted with a pump that will begin sending metals-contaminated
water via pipeline to a water treatment plant operated by the U.S. Bureau
of Reclamation. EPA expects that pumping and treatment will begin by mid-June.

3rd Annual National Summit of Mining Communities
5/14-- The summit will take place September 7-11, 2008 in historic Butte and
Anaconda, Montana. The Summit focuses on the diverse environmental and economic
effects that mining communities experience as a result of the boom and bust

Woods Cross, Utah refinery to invest $17M to control pollution
4/21-- Holly Refining & Marketing has agreed to spend more than $17 million
in new and upgraded pollution controls at its refinery in Woods Cross and
pay a $120,000 civil penalty. The settlement, part of EPA's Petroleum
Refinery Initiative, is expected to reduce air pollution by more than
420 tons of harmful emissions annually. Press

Brownfields grants to revitalize communities in Colorado, Montana
and Utah
4/7-- Communities across the nation will share more than $74 million in brownfields
grants to help revitalize former industrial and commercial sites, turning
them from problem properties to productive community use. Grantees in Region
8 include: Jamestown, Colorado, Salt Lake County, Utah, and Billings, Montana.

New lead rules to protect kids
3/31-- To further protect children from exposure to lead-based paint, EPA
is issuing new rules for contractors who renovate or repair housing, child-care
facilities or schools built before 1978. Under the new rules, workers must
follow lead-safe work practice standards to reduce potential exposure to dangerous
levels of lead during renovation and repair activities.

Mine site near Creede, Colo., proposed for Superfund cleanup
3/19-- EPA is proposing the Nelson Tunnel/Commodore Waste Rock site near Creede,
Colo., to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites. The draining mine
adit and waste rock pile are significant sources of water contamination to
Willow Creek and the Upper Rio Grande River. Today's announcement begins a
sixty-day comment period on the proposed listing. Press
