U.S. Magnesium added to Superfund priority list
11/4 -- EPA has added the 4,525-acre U.S. Magnesium site in Tooele County, Utah, to the Superfund National Priorities List. Magnesium production at the facility has produced a variety of toxic wastes that threaten workers, water quality and wildlife in the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. Press Release.
Utah man gets 20 years for environmental, other crimes
10/14 -- Larkin Baggett was sentenced to 20 years in jail today for environmental crimes and for illegally possessing firearms and aggravated assault on law officers. In September 2007, Baggett was indicted on charges related to dumping pollutants into a drain that led to a treatment plant in West Bountiful, Utah. Baggett’s actions allegedly caused the plant to violate permit limits for acute toxicity 22 times. Press Release.
The last trainload of metals-contaminated sediments leaves the Milltown Reservoir Superfund Site
9/2 -- Over the past 2 years 3 million tons of sediments have been excavated, loaded and hauled off-site for disposal. The Milltown project team has now removed the source of arsenic that polluted the local drinking water supply - beginning the process of naturally restoring the local aquifer. With removal of the Milltown Dam (2008-2009) and the sediments (2007-2009), the local fishery begins its recovery as well. More information.
