Game Day Challenge
Materials
Report recycling, composting, reuse, donation, and trash disposal in pounds. The following materials are included in the Game Day Challenge:
Paper
- Boxboard / chipboard
- Programs
- Newspaper
- Office paper(all colors)
Beverage Containers
- Plastic bottles (e.g., soda, water, bottles)
- Plastic cups
- Aluminum cans
- Glass bottles and jars
- Steel cans
Corrugated Cardboard
- Cardboard boxes
Mixed Recyclable Materials
- Any of the materials listed under paper, bottle and can, and corrugated cardboard recycling collected in a mixed manner such as single-stream
Organics
- Pre and post-consumer food waste that is donated, reused, or composted
- Compostable dinnerware, napkins, etc. that is composted
Trash
- Municipal solid waste (MSW) disposed via landfill or incinerator
Actual weights of recyclables should always be used. If actual weights are impossible to obtain, weight estimates derived from volume measurements may be substituted using the following guidelines:
- Volume-to-weight conversions must be done using the approved conversion factors. The factors below are loose/uncompacted. If you need additional factors, please contact the WasteWise Helpline (wastewisehelp@epa.gov) or (800) EPA-WISE.
- Programs: 950 lbs/cubic yard
- Newspaper: 400 lbs/cubic yard
- Office Paper: 364 lbs/cubic yard
- Plastic Bottles: 35 lbs/cubic yard
- Plastic Cups: 30 lbs/cubic yard
- Glass Bottles: 1,000 lbs/cubic yard
- Steel Cans: 150 lbs/cubic yard
- Corrugated Cardboard: 177 lbs/cubic yard
- Commingled Beverage Containers (plastic/glass/aluminum): 177 lbs/cubic yard
- Food Service Waste Including Service Ware: 50 lbs/cubic yard
- Food Prep and Scraps: 1,000 lbs/cubic yard
- Food Waste Including Corn on the Cob, Bones, Shellfish): 200 lbs/cubic yard
- Volume estimates must be based on actual observed quantities. For instance, a five yard dumpster of cardboard must be observed to be full, or a visual determination of how full it is must be made. Simply reporting based on capacity of the container without observed quantities is not allowed.
Forms
Registration Form
- The registration deadline has passed, but schools may be able to join. Please contact the WasteWise Helpline (wastewisehelp@epa.gov) or 800-EPA-WISE for more information.
Pre-Game Form
- Schools must complete the Pre-Game Challenge form by September 30, 2011.
- To access the Pre-Game Form, schools must:
- Login to Re-TRAC
; - Select the “Annual Data” tab at the top of the page; and
- Click on the blue exclamation point under “Game Day Challenge.” The Pre-Game Form is at the top of the page.
- Login to Re-TRAC

Post-Game Form
- Schools must report their numbers using the Post-Game form within a week following the selected game.
- To access the Post-Game form
- Login to Re-TRAC ;
- Select the “Annual Data” tab at the top of the page; and
- Click on the blue exclamation point under “Game Day Challenge.” The Post-Game Form is just below the Pre-Game Form.

Results and Standings
EPA will recognize all Game Day Challenge participants in December, 2011. EPA will present awards in the following five categories:
Waste Generation
Schools will be ranked based on the per capita weight of waste generated using the following formula:
Per Capita = Pounds of Trash + Pounds of Recyclables + Pounds of Compostables
Waste Total Attendance
Generation
The school with the lowest per capita waste generation wins.
Diversion Rate
Schools will be ranked based on their overall recycling rate which combines trash, recycling, and composting data using the following formula:
Diversion Rate = Pounds of Recyclables/Compostables x 100
Pounds of Trash + Pounds of Recyclables/Compostables
The school with the highest recycling rate wins.
Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Schools will be ranked on the per capita greenhouse gas reductions associated with their waste reduction achievements. These reductions will be calculated using EPA’s WARM factors programmed in the WasteWise Re-TRAC system. The per capita reduction will be calculated using the following formula:
Per Capita = Greenhouse Gas Reduction (MTCO2E)

Gas Reduction
The school with the highest greenhouse gas reduction wins.
Recycling
Schools will be ranked based on the per capita weight of recyclables using the following formula:
Per Capita = Pounds of Paper, Beverage Containers, and Corrugated Cardboard Recycled
Recycling Total Attendance
The school with the highest recycling rate wins.
Organics Reduction
Schools will be ranked based on the per capita weight of organic waste reduced using the following formula:
Per Capita = Pounds of Organics Donated, Reused, or Composted
Organics Total Attendance
Reduction
The school with the highest organic reduction rate wins.
