U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Meeting

The U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, of which EPA is a member, will be meeting Oct. 2-3, 2002, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This will be the 8th meeting of the Task Force, which was established by Executive Order 13089 in 1998 to lead the U.S. response to the growing, global environmental crisis affecting coral reef ecosystems. The Task Force is responsible for overseeing implementation of the Executive Order, and developing and implementing coordinated efforts to: map and monitor U.S. coral reefs; research the causes and solutions to coral reef degradation; reduce and mitigate coral reef degradation from pollution, over fishing and other causes; and implement strategies to promote conservation and sustainable use of coral reefs internationally. Much of the agenda for the October meeting will focus on ways to improve the Task Force's ability to implement coordinated actions to protect coral reefs and evaluate the effectiveness of those actions. For more information on the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, please contact Macara Lousberg at 202-566-1308, or visit the Task Force web site at: http://coralreef.govExit EPA Disclaimer If you have any suggestions, issues, or actions that should be addressed by the Task Force, please contact Macara Lousberg at Lousberg.Macara@epa.gov.

Forum on Contaminants in Fish

EPA will join the American Fisheries Society (AFS) and the Vermont Department of Health in co-hosting the National Annual Forum on Contaminants in Fish in Burlington, Vermont, on Oct. 20-22. The Forum brings together public health and environmental officials from states and tribes and other interested people who talk about assessing the possible health risks associated with eating noncommercial fish and wildlife. EPA has jointly co-sponsored the Forum with AFS since 1990. You can find information on the agenda and registration on the AFS website at http://www.fisheries.org/FishForum2002.shtmlExit EPA Disclaimer You can also contact EPA's Jeff Bigler at 202/566-0389.

International Coastal Cleanup Campaign for 2002

Please join us on Sept. 21, 2002, for the 17th annual International Coastal Cleanup Campaign (ICCC), the largest beach and waterway cleanup campaign with data collection in the world. Each year, volunteers in states, territories, and worldwide, clear tons of trash and debris from coastlines, rivers and lakes.

For many years, the EPA has been the leading Agency in addressing trash in our waterways, oceans, beaches and coasts. EPA staff from Headquarters and the Regions participate in clean ups around the Country.

If you would like to participate in any of the local cleanups, please contact Javier Vélez-Arocho at 202-566-1257.
