Turning Weathercasts into an Envirocast

During the recent 32nd Annual Conference on Broadcast Meteorology, held on Aug. 11 in Seattle, Washington, Michelle Pirzadeh, Acting Director for the Office Ecosystems and Communities for EPA Region 10, talked to broadcast meteorologists from around the country about the important role that they can play in educating people about the connections between weather and water quality. Ms. Pirzadeh encouraged the meteorologists to use maps, satellite images, and other visual aides to help explain “what is a watershed,” to incorporate watershed “tips” into their broadcasts, and to promote the upcoming World Water Monitoring Day on Oct. 18, 2003. She also discussed some of the impacts associated with polluted water –including impacts on human health and our economic well-being. Several meteorologists came by EPA’s booth and signed up to receive monitoring kits for the upcoming World Water Monitoring Day. Chet Wayland, from EPA’s Air Now Program, also talked about the availability of real-time ozone animations and next-day Air Quality Index forecasts as well as real-time particulate pollution monitoring and forecasts that will be launched by EPA in October. EPA and USCG Sign Memorandum of Understanding

EPA Assistant Administrator for Water G. Tracy Mehan III and Rear Admiral Thomas Gilmour, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Aug. 21 identifying EPA as a cooperating agency in the development of the Environmental Impact Statement for the Coast Guard's ballast water discharge standard rule. In signing the MOU, Mr. Mehan emphasized the serious environmental and economic consequences of aquatic invasive species and pledged EPA support to assist the Coast Guard in development of the regulations. This MOU complements other activities in which the two agencies currently work together, with other Federal agencies, to address invasive species introduced via ships into U.S. waters. These areas include evaluation of potential ballast water treatment technologies, and development of an international convention to address ballast water. For more information call Kathy Hurld 202-566-1200.
