EPA Issues Draft Policy on Blending For Nation’s Sewage Treatment Facilities

EPA has issued this draft policy to establish consistent national guidelines on the practice of blending that is used by municipal sewage treatment facilities to manage high flows associated with storm events. Already widely used, blending is a technique to manage high flows that could damage sensitive parts of the sewage treatment system or could lead to overflows of raw sewage into local waterways. The draft policy outlines safeguards and requirements to be followed during blending and restates the requirement that all discharges must continue to meet Clean Water Act permit limits. The draft policy and additional information can be found at www.epa.gov/npdes/blending The public comment period ends on Jan. 9, 2004.

EPA Requests Scientific Views on Criteria for Atrazine

EPA published in the Federal Register on Friday, Nov. 7, an announcement that it is releasing a revised draft ambient water quality criteria document and recommending criteria for Atrazine. The Office of Water is taking this action simultaneously with the Office of Pesticide Programs’ release of its updated and revised Ecological Fate and Effects Risk Assessment for Atrazine. EPA is providing these draft materials to give the public an opportunity to provide scientific views or information. You can get more on this action by visiting the Agency’s internet web site at http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/criteria/atrazine/atrazref.html.

November and December Focus on Drinking Water Security

As part of the celebration of the Year of Clean Water during November and December, we will continue to focus on activities that promote the security of our drinking water resources as well as our drinking water and wastewater facilities and equipment. As a product of these efforts, we have assembled new materials that address some of the concerns about water and wastewater security for a variety of audiences, including the general public, medical professionals, utilities, and others. To view or order materials please visit http://www.epa.gov/water/yearofcleanwater/month.html#nov.

Office of Water Continues Regional Water Reviews-Next Up New York

EPA's Office of Water is continuing it's ongoing review of each regional water program. These "reviews" are somewhat different now. Rather than devote the entire review to performance measures, the Office of Water has broadened the review to include a significant policy discussion. This policy discussion -- the states are invited to attend a portion -- focuses on the challenges that each specific region is facing in implementing the national water program. The New York regional review will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003 and Friday, Nov. 14, 2003.
