National Nonpoint Source Conference Held in Austin

EPA and the Association of State and Interstate Water Pollution Control Administrators (ASIWPCA) convened a successful and energizing conference for State and EPA nonpoint source (NPS) program managers last week in Austin, TX. The conference, entitled "Implementation at the Watershed Level," included a series of sessions that focused on each of the significant components of watershed plan development and implementation. Participants discussed exciting new assessment tools (e.g., remote sensing), greatly enhanced modeling tools, new (agriculture) and improved (urban) databases on best management practices effectiveness; creative new funding mechanisms at the Federal, State, and local levels; and new multi-media and other outreach tools and programs. Copies of the presentations are posted on ASIWPCA’s web site at: http://www.asiwpca.org/events/other.htm. Exit EPA Disclaimer

2004 National Fish Forum

Over 250 representatives of public health and environmental departments from tribes, states, and other interested groups gathered from Jan. 25 to 28 in San Diego, CA to discuss issues related to contaminants in fish. Sponsored by EPA, California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, this year’s Conference focused on a discussion of the draft joint FDA/EPA advisory for mercury in fish and on identifying what is needed to help states, tribes, and local governments manage their fish advisory programs. The Conference included an excellent poster session where over 30 posters were highlighted. You can find the agenda and meeting presentations by visiting EPA’s Internet web site at http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/fish/forum/2004/agenda.htm. A proceedings document will be published later in the year.
