President George W. Bush Announces NominationPresident George W. Bush announced on March 3 his intention to nominate Benjamin Grumbles, of Virginia, to be an Assistant Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (Water Programs). Grumbles currently serves as Acting Assistant Administrator of the Office of Water at the Environmental Protection Agency. He previously served as Senior Counsel to the Water Resources and Environmental Subcommittee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Grumbles earned his bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University, his Juris Doctors from Emory University and his master's degree from The George Washington University Law School. For further information please click here http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/03/20040303-6.html Draft National Coastal Condition Report IIA notice of availability was published today in the Federal Register for a 90-day public comment period, requesting comments on the draft National Coastal Condition Report II (NCCR II). The NCCR II describes the condition of coastal waters based on several available data sets from different agencies and areas of the country and summarizes them to present a continuing picture of the condition of coastal waters. The NCCR II is the product of EPA (ORD and OW), NOAA and the Department of Interior, based on data from those agencies, States, and others. The first NCCR was issued in 2002, but did not include as complete a database as does the NCCR II. The NCCR II can be found on EPA’s web site at: http://www.epa.gov/owow/oceans/nccr2/index.html EPA Requests Nominations for Membership in Water Security Working GroupEPA recently announced the formation of the National Drinking Water Advisory Council’s Water Security Working Group (WSWG) for the purpose of addressing best drinking water and wastewater security practices and policies. A Federal Register notice, dated Feb. 27, 2004 [69 FR 9312], provides additional details about the Group’s charge and nomination protocol. Interested nominees, or persons or organizations who would like to nominate qualified individuals, have until March 29, 2004, to submit the nominee’s credentials to EPA for consideration of a one-year term. Acting Assistant Administrator Speaks at Association of State and Interstate Water Pollution Control Administrators (ASIWPCA) MeetingBenjamin Grumbles, Acting Assistant Administrator for EPA, spoke at the ASIWPCA Mid-Year meeting on Monday, March 8 at the Westin Grand Hotel in Washington, D.C. and described the Office of Water’s priorities involving monitoring, conservation, and restoration. EPA’s Office of Water Directors participated in the meeting’s roundtable discussions. For more information visit the ASIWPCA website at www.asiwpca.orgNational Environmental Justice Advisory Council Meeting (NEJAC) Coming SoonThe National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) meeting will be held Tuesday, April 13, through Friday, April 16, 2004 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel in New Orleans, La. The focus is what short-term and long-term actions should the Agency take in proactively implementing the concepts contained in its Framework for Cumulative Risk Assessment? The NEJAC meeting will include two public comment periods scheduled for the evenings of April 13 and 14. In addition, six subcommittees of the NEJAC including the Air and Water Subcommittee will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15. The NEJAC will wrap up all discussions on Friday, April 16.
