EPA Participates in the Annual Anacostia River Environmental FairIn the spirit of the National Drinking Water Week, May 2-8, EPA's Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water will continue its tradition of the last six years by helping 200 kids build their own portable aquifers at the Anacostia River Environmental Fair on Friday, May 7. The event is organized by the Washington, DC, Department of Health and takes place at Anacostia Park, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., rain or shine. The objective of our hands-on "Aquifer in a Cup" activity is to illustrate how water is stored in an aquifer, how ground water can become contaminated, and how this contamination ends up in a drinking water source. For more information, please contact the Department of Health at 202-535-2240. Availability of Beach Grant Funding and National List of BeachesAbout $10 million in grant funding for beach monitoring and notification programs is now available to eligible coastal states, territories, including those bordering the Great Lakes and tribes to help meet the new requirements under the Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health (BEACH) Act of 2000. The National List of Beaches is also available. This list provides a national baseline of the extent of beach monitoring across the country. It will help EPA measure improvements in monitoring and notification at all coastal and Great Lake beaches. Both actions are part of EPA’s Clean Beaches Plan designed to accelerate progress at the federal and state level to meet the requirements of the BEACH Act of 2000.
