President Bush and Administrator Leavitt Announce New Executive Order on Great Lakes Collaboration

On May 18, 2004 President Bush issued an Executive Order establishing a Great Lakes Interagency Task Force and promoting a regional collaboration of national significance for the Great Lakes. Administrator Leavitt, who will chair the new Task Force comprised of 10 cabinet level members, joined Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Ohio Governor Bob Taft in announcing the Executive Order in Chicago.

"This bipartisan collaboration, coordinated closely with Congress, will be a major advance in restoring and protecting the Great Lakes," said Benjamin Grumbles, Acting Assistant Administrator for the Office of Water.

New Website Highlights Drinking Water Research World-Wide

EPA has launched a new Drinking Water Research Information Network (DRINK) website that tracks on-going drinking water research. DRINK website will help disseminate information within the research community, assess future research priorities, provide updates on regulations, and support programs that protect drinking water and public health. Lead in Drinking Water Information Available Online

Information is now available about the 90th percentile levels for lead in drinking water for 85 percent of the nation's 838 water systems serving more than 50,000 people. The data received to date show that 22 systems exceeded the 15 parts per billion (ppb) action level for lead in one or more monitoring periods since 2000. Only eight systems exceeded the action level in 2003. A summary of the findings is available at: http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lcrmr/implement.html. 2005 National Water Program Guidance Copies Now Available

Printed copies of the final, 2005 National Water Program Guidance are now available from the Office of Water.

The Guidance describes environmental and public health goals for water programs and key activities in various program areas. During the Summer, EPA Regions will be working with States and Tribes to develop workplans.

Applications Being Accepted for Nutrient Criteria Development

Applications Being Accepted for Nutrient Criteria Development EPA is accepting applications for grant awards from now until midnight June 24, 2004. Agencies and organizations applying for funding should be knowledgeable in the areas of water quality data analyses and data management, particularly in regard to nutrient and algal relationships, in addition to demonstrating a strong ability to leverage resources. National Beaches Conference Coming in October

The Office of Water will hold a National Beaches Conference Oct. 13 to 15 in San Diego, Calif. The Conference is designed to help all levels of beach water quality managers and public health officials share information and provide input on implementing a successful recreational beach program. Eight Workshops Available for Stormwater Program Managers

Over the next several months, EPA will sponsor eight workshops for municipal stormwater managers. These two-day workshops will provide participants with innovative tools that can be used to implement local stormwater programs. The workshops will include lively group exercises and many opportunities for discussion. Workshops will be held in Hartford, CT; Philadelphia, PA; New Orleans, LA; Kansas City, KS; Denver, CO; Sacramento, CA; Atlanta, GA; Salem, OR.
