EPA Reaffirms 20 Years of Partnership with Indian Tribes

The Environmental Protection Agency's commitment to the partnership between the agency and Indian Tribes was reaffirmed Thursday, Sept. 23, at an Open House commemorating the 20th anniversary of EPA's Indian Policy. This policy entrusted EPA with the responsibility of supporting the role of Tribal governments in protecting the environment and public health in Indian Country.

"I was proud to be a part of two significant events — the opening of the nation's first museum dedicated to the cultural achievements of Native Americans— and Administrator Leavitt’s reaffirmation of the EPA's Indian Policy," said Carol Jorgensen, Director of EPA's American Indian Environmental Office. "We have waited a long time for this historical moment which recognizes the indigenous peoples and honors our vibrant cultures."

EPA and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Initiate Data Exchange Project

The EPA American Indian Environmental Office and the Office of Environmental Information are setting up eGOV procedures to begin the electronic sharing of environmental data with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, in Cherokee, NC. The project is part of an agency wide effort to automate and streamline environmental reporting so that environmental data flows seamlessly among EPA programs, other federal agencies, and tribes. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is the first tribe to begin this network exchange process. Featured as a permanent collaborator in the National Museum of American Indians, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has a rich history, including the development of a syllabary consisting of 86 symbols. The data exchange project was started by Calvin Murphy, Chairman of the EPA Tribal Caucus, a national advisory group to the agency, and Carmen McIntyre, Environmental and Natural Resources Manager for the tribe.

Technical Guidance on CAFOs is Now Available

EPA has published a technical guidance entitled Managing Manure at Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). We prepared the guidance for NPDES permit authorities, permittees, and technical service providers who implement EPA’s February 2003 revisions to the permit regulations and effluent guidelines for CAFOs. The 2003 regulations reflected unprecedented cooperation between EPA and USDA (Department of Agriculture) to help livestock and poultry producers meet their own and society's goals for environmental quality and profitability. The detailed information in this guidance will help prevent billions of pounds of pollutants from entering America’s waters. You can find the guidance document on EPA’s web site at www.epa.gov/guide/cafo.

National Estuaries Day Celebrated

EPA held a variety of community events celebrating National Estuaries Day which helped to educate people about the importance of protecting the estuaries. Over 200 classrooms and more than 2,500 students across the country took a live webcast journey through seven estuaries that are part of EPA’s National Estuary Program or NOAA’s National Estuarine Research Reserves. Trained naturalists and educators guided the internet expeditions through estuaries in North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Washington, Alabama and Massachusetts. Students took an upclose look at different estuarine habitats, including wetlands and eelgrass beds, saw many interesting estuarine species such as sea stars, scallops, and brown pelicans, and learned about the importance of estuaries.
