National Coastal Condition Report II (NCCR II) ReleasedBenjamin H. Grumbles, Assistant Administrator for Water, on Jan. 13 released EPA’s National Coastal Condition Report II (NCCR II) at a Coastal America Learning Center dedication ceremony at Kure Beach, NC. A joint product of the Office of Water and Office of Research and Development, the NCCR II describes and ranks the condition or status, extent, and geographical distribution of national coastal ecological resources, updating the first report issued in 2001. The information it contains is based upon four years of EPA sponsored monitoring data from 23 coastal states and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Report provides coastal managers with the necessary information to identify existing and emerging problems, target water quality actions wisely, and effectively manage those actions to maximize benefits. The NCCR II reports that the condition of the Nation's coastal waters is fair, which remains essentially the same as in the first report in 2001. The report also covers 100% of estuarine waters in the lower 48 states, compared to about 70% in the previous report. For more information on the NCCR II, contact Barry Burgan at 202-566-1242 or send an e-mail to burgan.barry@epa.gov.
