Grumbles to Speak at Ground Water ConferenceOn Monday, Feb. 28, Assistant Administrator Benjamin H. Grumbles will be the featured luncheon speaker at the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) annual legislative conference in Washington, D.C. He will discuss the importance of ground water and the various actions EPA and others can take to protect it. Attendees will include ground water scientists and engineers, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers for ground water equipment. Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts RuleEPA Headquarters held a public meeting on Jan. 18, in Washington, DC, to discuss recent research related to the proposed Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule. The subjects addressed include disinfection byproduct occurrence and formation, and studies on reproductive and developmental health effects, on cancer, and on toxicity health effects. The Agency believes that the new science continues to support the approach taken in the proposed rule to make incremental regulatory changes aimed at lowering disinfection byproduct levels while providing equitable public health protection. EPA proposed the rule on Aug. 18, 2003, and is currently working on the final rule. For more information, please contact Tom Grubbs at 202-564-5262. Council of State Governments and EPA Hosted a National Meeting on the Wadeable Streams AssessmentThe Council of State Governments and EPA hosted a national meeting on the Wadeable Streams Assessment on Jan. 25-27, 2005. EPA and state collaborators will complete data analysis and evaluation in advance of a critical set of regional meetings with states in June and July which will lead to the estimated completion of a draft report in Sept. 2005 and final report by Dec. 2005.
