EPA Celebrates National Drinking Water WeekThe Office of Water will sponsor an event on the Woodrow Wilson Plaza outside of the Ronald Reagan Building on May 4, in Washington, DC. The event celebrates National Drinking Water Week, which runs from May 1-8, and EPA’s on-going recognition of the 30th Anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act. National Drinking Water Week was first sponsored by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). In the early 1990’s, AWWA formed a coalition with several organizations including EPA, USDA, the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, the Water Environment Federation and the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators to celebrate the week nationally. Assistant Administrator Speaks at Clean Water, Great Lakes EventsOn May 3, Benjamin Grumbles, Assistant Administrator for Water, will give a keynote address at the National Clean Water Policy Forum “The Nation’s Regulatory Outlook....EPA’s Perspective,” in Washington, DC. He will discuss the Agency’s priorities and the fiscal year 2006 budget. On May 5, in Rochester, NY, he will be a featured speaker at the Center for Environmental Information conference on Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative. Grumbles will discuss the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration and implementation of the President bush’s Executive Order (May 2004) to restore and protect the Great Lakes. Upcoming Advanced Asset Management Training SessionsThe Office of Water will host a “Working Session Exploring Opportunities to Enhance Collaboration by Water and Wastewater Utilities in Advancing Asset Management” on May 5-6 in Washington, DC. This forum is an opportunity for utilities, consultants, associations, researchers and educators to exchange knowledge and information and provide an improved framework for furthering cooperative efforts. EPA will also co-sponsor two training sessions on best practices in Advanced Asset Management in June. The sessions provide a “hands on” understanding of best practice tools and techniques in the growing field of Advanced Asset Management. They are designed to meet the needs of water and wastewater utility CEOs, senior level personnel, as well as Federal employees, State Agency personnel and water and wastewater service providers. EPA collaborates with partner organizations on these and other similar workshops on a case-by-case basis. Mississippi River Basin Nutrients Science WorkshopEPA's Office of Water is hosting a 3 day workshop on Oct. 4-6, 2005, in St. Louis, Missouri to assess the state of the science regarding the fate and effect of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in large rivers in the Mississippi River Basin (including the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio Rivers as well as other major tributaries). EPA is committed to supporting efforts by the States to develop and adopt water quality standards for nutrients in the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. As part of this effort, this workshop will review the available science from government, academia, industry and environmental organizations and will seek to identify the best and most expedient approach(es) to develop nutrient water quality standards to protect the Mississippi River Basin and the Gulf of Mexico. Workshop on National Lakes AssessmentEPA sponsored a conference workshop on a National Lakes Assessment Project on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, as part of the 18th Annual State Lakes meeting in Chicago, Il. The purpose of the workshop was to seek input on designing a future National Lakes Assessment as well as building capacity at all levels of government for comprehensive lake and reservoir monitoring programs. The workshop was led by Office of Water staff including Peter Grevatt, Chief of the Monitoring Branch; Anne Weinberg; and Otto Gutenson. More than 80 people attended this workshop. For more information contact Otto Gutenson at gutenson.otto@epa.gov. 18th Annual State Lakes Meeting held in ChicagoEPA sponsored the 18th Annual State Lakes meeting on April 26-29, 2005, in Chicago, Il. The theme of the meeting was "Protecting Lakes and Reservoirs in Urbanizing Areas.” Geoffrey Anderson, Acting Chief of Staff, EPA’s Office of Policy, gave a keynote address re. “Smart Growth and Clean Water.” Rod Frederick, in EPA’s Nonpoint Source Control Branch, also spoke at the conference re: EPA’s new draft Urban Management Measures Guidance which is posted on the Web at: http://www.epa.gov/owow/nps/urbanmm/index.html . This conference was attended by state lake managers, EPA staff, lake association representatives, academics, and volunteer water monitors. Over 180 people attended the meeting.
