World Water Monitoring Day is Tuesday, Oct. 18

World Water Monitoring Day, an annual event commemorating the anniversary of the Clean Water Act, provides citizens and families the opportunity to get involved in local watershed activities and learn about water quality issues and water monitoring . Between Sept. 18 and Oct. 18, people of all ages throughout the world will be taking simple measures of the quality of their local waters entering their results into an international database. Thousands of U.S. kids and their families will be participating, along with kids and families in Japan, Australia, South Africa, Israel, Taiwan, and many other countries. On Oct. 18 events celebrating the anniversary of the Clean Water Act will be held throughout the world.

The Assistant Administrator for Water, Benjamin Grumbles, and the Regional Administrator for Region 7, Jim Gulliford, will be participating in an event on Oct. 18 in St. Louis. The Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water, Brent Fewell, will be participating in an event at the Earth Conservation Corps’ Matthew Henson Earth Conservation Center on Oct. 18 in Washington, DC. World Water Monitoring Day is sponsored by Americas Clean Water Foundation and is in its third year. AIEO Launches Two Tribal Information Web Sites

The Office of Water’s American Indian Environmental Office has launched two applications for sharing tribal information.

The first is Tribal Windows to the Environment http://oaspub.epa.gov/tims/twe.html. This site is a complement to the EPA Window to My Environment application and includes all the information from that site, organized by federally recognized tribes.
The second is Tribal Contacts Data System https://oasint.rtpnc.epa.gov/TIMS/contact_ro.html. This site provides address mailing labels for Tribal Environmental Leaders, Tribal Environmental Program Managers, and members of the EPA Tribal Caucus. Addresses can be updated on a dynamic, real time basis.

Users’ guides for the two applications will be made available upon request by sending an email to liu.ed@epa.gov.

Assistant Administrator Grumbles Meets with China’s Vice Minister of Water Resources Zhai Haohui

Last week in Washington DC, Assistant Administrator Ben Grumbles met with a delegation from China’s Ministry of Water Resources led by Vice Minster Zhai Haohui. Minister Zhai’s delegation was comprised of several senior ministry officials. The purpose of the meeting was for EPA’s Office of Water and the Ministry to open a dialogue on issues of mutual interest and potential collaboration. The meeting concluded with the Office of Water agreeing to provide the Ministry information on several important water management areas, including decentralized wastewater management, wetlands restoration and water quality trading, among others. Assistant Administrator Grumbles and Minister Zhai agreed to continue an open dialogue for additional collaboration in the future.

EPA Partners with Onsite Wastewater Managers

Benjamin Grumbles and other EPA officials participated in the 14th annual meeting of the National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (NOWRA) in Cleveland, Ohio. NOWRA is the largest organization within the U.S. dedicated solely to educating and representing members within the onsite and decentralized community. NOWRA and seven other organizations entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with EPA in January to facilitate addressing issues pertaining to decentralized systems. The meeting continued to build on the cooperative effort between the EPA and NOWRA including discussion on implementing the Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems Strategy.

Deputy Assistant Administrator to Keynote New York City Water Conference

Brent Fewell, the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water, will be the keynote luncheon speaker at a conference sponsored by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection in cooperation with US EPA in celebration of the 100th anniversary of NYC's modern water supply system on October 20. He will focus on protecting source water quality, infrastructure, filtration issues and the challenges drinking water systems may face in the future. The attendees will include elected officials, attorneys, engineers, drinking water administrators and the news media.

Chesapeake Bay Federal Agencies Meeting

During a meeting last week, Administrator Stephen Johnson and Assistant Administrator Benjamin Grumbles welcomed the Federal agency executives with programs that contribute to Chesapeake Bay restoration, and challenged them to be more proactive and collaborative in accelerating Bay restoration efforts. The purpose of the October 7 meeting was to identify opportunities to more effectively use the combined Federal resources and authorities to meet our commitments to restore the Bay. The executives discussed opportunities to emphasize cooperative conservation in support of the Chesapeake Bay partnership. The agencies highlighted ongoing and new initiatives, and agreed to cooperate in the development of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Assistance Network, which will publicize existing federal agency funding programs and opportunities within the watershed. Participants included representatives of EPA, NASA, GSA and the Departments of Defense, Commerce, Agriculture, Interior, and Homeland Security.
