Abstract:
This dataset lists known mining operations, mineral deposits/occurrences and processing plants, and identifies more than 221,000 mineral locations and processing plants. This dataset was derived from the Mineral Availability System (MAS)/Mineral Industry Location System (MILS) CD-Rom.

The Minerals Availability System (MAS) is an activity of the Bureau of Mines that systematically measures and classifies identified domestic and foreign mineral resources according to their respective extraction technologies, economics, and availability. The MAS program provides a procedure for continuous monitoring of the present and potential availability of minerals to the United States within the context of many parameters that can impinge upon this availability. Examples of such technical parameters are methods and costs of: mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, transportation, infrastructure, labor, and capital investment.

This CDROM is nolonger being update since the closing of the USBM. The CDROM is available from USGPO until supplies last.

For distribution with BASINS v.2.0, the data layer was prepared in Arcview shape file format.


Purpose:
The Mines coverage provides a GIS applications with a valuable data layer for mapping mined areas within the United States. This is useful for a large number of analysis including proximity to populated areas and locations with respect to surface waters.

Attribute accuracy is tested by manual comparison of the source with hard copy plots and/or Geographic Positioning System readouts obtained during field verification visits. Point of Reference, Precision of Point, Elevation Precision and Datum of Elevation are individual fields included in the data base to describe the accuracy of information for individual records. The geographic attributes (latitude, longitude, and elevation) and the accuracy fields mentioned above are documented more extensively in the Data Dictionary included as a document file on the CD-ROM.

Latitude and Longitude accuracy defined by the Precision of Point data field for each record, and gives the maximum deviation from the exact Point of Reference in meters (e.g., 10, 500, 5000). Precision of Point is required if Point of Reference is entered. An entry of 99,999 indicates that the precision is over 10,000 meters. ZON, HEM, NOR and EAS fields in the database represent the Zone, Hemisphere, Northing, and Easting attributes, respectively, of the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinate system for the mineral property of record.

Point of Reference, or the physical determination point, elevation precision is defined for each record by the ELP, elevation precision, and DAT, or datum, fields. Using the ADD EVENT THEME function of Arcview, an Arcview shape file showing the locations of the mines is created based on the latitude and longitude coordinates associated with each dam site in the dams database. Its primary attribute table contains selected attribute fields of the dams in the MAS/MILS database.

For distribution with BASINS 2.0, the data layer was divided by EPA regions (i.e. distribution by CD). Other form of data distribution (e.g. by cataloging unit) is available through the web ( <http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/basins/> ).

The BASINS web page has instructions for downloading datasets. It also has a link to The National Center for Environmental Publications and Information (NCEPI), from which BASINS CD-ROMs may be ordered. Each CD-ROM contains the BASINS v2.0 Application and this data set along with others covering the spatial extent of an EPA Region.
