EPA Review: Types of Approval
The EPA Regional Administrator can issue any one of three types of approvals following review of a State/Tribe's standards.
| Type of EPA Approval | Descriptions |
|---|---|
| Approval | 1) Water quality standards become applicable. |
| Partial Approval | 2) Part of water quality standards become applicable; the remaining parts are disapproved (or yet to be reviewed). |
| Contingent Approval (subject to the results of a Federal consultation under the Endangered Species Act (ESA, Section 7)) | 3) Water quality standards become applicable contingent on EPA consultation with the "Services" (the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service) on whether aspects of the standards are likely to adversely affect species. |
