This site provides data downloads of attribute data contained in the following water program databases. Some program database attribute data comes from a static extract at a given point in time, while others directly access the relevant databases and return the most up-to-date publicly available information. In order for the data to be included in a given dataset, States and other jurisdictions must have submitted information to the program database.

The GIS shapefiles, available for download from the RAD IMS download page, show the spatial extent of the hydrology.  Attribute information available here must be joined/linked from the corresponding program attribute table to the shapefile by the data element provided in the "Relational Key" column below. The relational key for the shapefiles is source_featureid.

Example of how to Join Event Shapefiles and Attribute Table Data

To tie 303(d) attribute information to the Impaired Waters shapefile, you would use the following steps.

  1. Download the Impaired Waters event shapefile for a given state from the RAD IMS download page.
  2. Download the corresponding Impaired Waters (303(d)) attribute information from the WATERS Expert Query Tool in either a comma separated file (.CSV) or a tab delimited file (.TAB).
  3. Convert the .CSV or .TAB file to a database file (.DBF) in Excel. This can be done by choosing the "File" menu, selecting "Save As", and changing the data file type in the drop down box to one of the dBASE (.DBF) options.
  4. Take both the event shapefile and the attribute database file into a GIS software package such as ArcView 3.x or ArcGIS 9.x, and link the attribute information to the shapefile using the LIST_ID field (see "Relational Key" field in the table below for the correct field to use for other shapefiles) in the attribute information table and the source_featureid field in the shapefile.
