Supplemental Information
The World Trade Center terrorist attacks of September 11 have affected us all. As a result of the World Trade Center disaster, we have been facing hard times. These are times when reaching out to and supporting each other matters.
What does Project Liberty do?
Project Liberty provides one-to-one or group counseling services wherever
you wish to have them - in your home, school, business, office, or place
of worship.
At a time of crisis, many people find it helpful to have someone who cares, someone who listens. This is what Project Liberty does. We offer support to persons and even to small groups, for example, through employers or places of worship. Along with support, Project Liberty staff help individuals to understand what is happening and how they are reacting. We help you to think about options and to find people or agencies that can assist with any disaster-related problems.
Who can receive counseling services from Project Liberty? Where?
Anyone. If the World Trade Center disaster has affected you, your family,
your employees, or members of your spiritual group, for example, you can
receive free counseling services. Project Liberty staff can provide services
anywhere, including homes, businesses, schools, colleges, houses of worship,
shelters, and community centers. You can have services scheduled at a
time that works best for you or your group.
What exactly do Project Liberty counselors do?
Project Liberty counselors are trained to talk with you about your concerns.
They will help you consider how best to meet your needs and suggest options.
They will also help you locate other resources that you may need. If you
would like to find a grief support group in your neighborhood, for instance,
they will help you do this. Examples of some of the other ways we can
help include:
- Meeting with a family to hear their concerns, to help them understand their responses, and to think of ways to deal with both
- Leading a discussion of a church group to help group members become aware of normal reactions to a disaster, how to avoid long-term problems, and where to get more help, when needed
- Training teachers and aides to know signs that schoolchildren may show when they have trouble coping
- Talking with a group of employees during a brown-bag lunch about normal responses and healthy ways to cope with trauma
