E. Timothy Oppelt


E. Timothy Oppelt is the Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Homeland Security Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is responsible for directing research to develop technologies and guidance for characterizing and mitigating threats from potential chemical and biological weapons attacks on public structures and water infrastructure. Prior to this, he served for 10 years as Director of EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory, where he led research on improved technologies, hazardous waste management, drinking water supply, wastewater treatment, air pollution control and contaminated site remediation. In 2000, he also served as Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator for Science in EPA's Office of Research and Development.

Over his 35 year career with EPA, Mr. Oppelt has managed and conducted a broad range of pollution prevention and control technology research.

He is most recognized at the national and international levels for his personal achievements in research on management and incineration of hazardous waste and in the development of innovative techniques for treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater.

Mr. Oppelt joined EPA in 1970, after graduating from Cornell University with a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Sanitary Engineering. He also received an MBA from Xavier University in 1976. In recognition of his important contributions to environmental protection and the development of national regulations and standards, he received the President's Distinguished Rank Award in 1998.
