Dr. David Prezant


Dr. David Prezant received his Bachelor of Science from Columbia College in 1977 and his Doctor of Medicine from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1981. He is a Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Research Director for the Pulmonary Division. He is the Course Director for AECOM’s Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (Physiology and Pathophysiology) lecture series given to the 2nd year medical students. He is an attending pulmonary physician at Montefiore Medical Center and provides intern/resident/fellow teaching and clinical supervision in Montefiore’s Pulmonary Clinic and their pulmonary ward/ICU. Dr. Prezant is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Prezant’s is also the Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Senior Pulmonary Consultant to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Dr. Prezant is a member of the John P. Redmond, International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Medical Advisory Board. He represents FDNY as a member of the technical committee for the Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative and was one of the committee’s medical experts designing the IAFF/IAFC Wellness / Fitness Program and the Firefighter Candidate Ability Test. He also represents FDNY on the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) medical committee designing medical standards for firefighters and candidates. Dr. Prezant is Vice-Chairman of the American College of Chest Physicians Committee/Network on Disaster Preparedness.

Prior to 9/11/01, Dr. Prezant’s research interests were equally divided between basic science laboratory investigations of chronic obstructive lung disease and applied research on firefighter thermal-related injuries/illness. On 9/11/01, Dr. Prezant was at the World Trade Center taking care of FDNY firefighters and was present during the collapse and its aftermath. Since that day he has devoted his entire clinical and research efforts to the design and implementation of a medical monitoring and treatment program for FDNY firefighters funded by FDNY and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Prezant has published numerous research papers based on his research in respiratory medicine and Firefighter health and safety. Several research papers on the health impact of World Trade Center Collapse on NYC Firefighters have recently been published in the 9/11/02 issues of the New England Journal of Medicine, the CDC’s MMWR and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Topics of interest include firefighter inhalation injuries, asthma, burn injuries and exercise capacity in modern firefighting uniforms, health/fitness training, and the prevention of life-threatening injuries. Dr. Prezant is the recipient of a NIOSH grant to study injury prevention in New York City Firefighters and a CDC grant to study the effects.
