Claudia Thompson, Ph.D. |
Claudia Thompson, Ph.D., joined the Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT), NIEHS in 1994 as a Scientific Program Administrator. Prior to joining DERT, Dr. Thompson was a research scientist for ten years in the Laboratory of Biochemical Risk Analysis, Division of Intramural Research, NIEHS. In this capacity, her research interests focused on developing biomarkers to gain mechanistic information for addressing human health risks from exposure to potential carcinogens, and applying this in risk assessment models.
As a Scientific Program Administrator one of Dr. Thompsons responsibilities include program management and the analysis of the scientific accomplishments and the scientific direction for the Superfund Basic Research Program (SBRP). The SBRP is a large multi disciplinary research program that combines biomedical research with engineering, geosciences and ecology. Dr. Thompson also manages a research portfolio of investigator-initiated independent research grants. The scientific areas of research that are within her portfolio include: biomarker (exposure, effect and susceptibility) development, metabolic toxicology, chemical mixtures research and molecular mechanisms of metal toxicity and carcinogenicity. Dr. Thompson began an effort to apply proteomic technologies to environmental health research. Since 2002, Dr. Thompson has taken the lead in coordinating World Trade Center research and outreach activities being conducted by the NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Centers and the SBRP. Dr. Thompson received her Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Bradley University in Peoria Illinois and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
