Thoughts from EPA Staffers who volunteered for Math and Science Day

Upon arrival to six flags, they were eager to play, not at first interested in learning. After playing for a while they came to realize that learning was essential to energize their day.I learned 86% of household trash can be recycled. I think twice now before I throw anything away.I was impresssed by the number of students that stopped by the booth and their interest in the water cycle and groundwater model.Being at a very public event and interacting with so many kids from such a variety of communities and backgrounds proved to me once again how important environmental education is. More than one child said they had never planted a seed or heard about the good and the bad effects of sun rays.From the "Managing Expectations" department: Much laughter as the park opened and hundreds of children appeared to be rushing our table, then whooshed by, to the Flying Carousel ride situated directly behind us. Once kids got a ride or two under their belt, though, they enjoyed our demonstration!Math and Science Day was one of the most fun days I\'ve had since joining the EPA. Watching children (and adults!) having fun while learning a little about what we do reminds me of why I love science so much.I enjoyed reaching out to our future scientist and educating them on the importance of taking care of the environment.Although it didn\'t happen very often, the experience of having a kid come up to the booth and be totally engaged, asking questions that made ME think, especially when they could be on a ride made me realize that all the effort of the day was absolutely worth it.I found it interesting that only the very young kids (1st grade and under) got the correct answer to the first ? on the waste wheel (deals with the "reduce" part of the 3Rs). It even stumped adults!
