Indiana Harbor Canal Great Lakes Legacy Act Cleanup

EPA and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management are investigating an option for the off-site disposal of sediment dredged from PCB-contaminated “hot spots” in the Indiana Harbor Canal. As part of this option, deeper sediment would be capped in place.

The agencies are exploring use of EPA's Great Lakes Legacy Act authority to fund off-site disposal in partnership with the Indiana natural resource co-trustees (IDEM and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources) and Arcelor Mittal. In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have helped make this option available.

This approach is protective of public health. If the off-site disposal option is determined to be feasible, the projected schedule is to complete the remedial design by late 2018 and construction activities could begin as early as 2019.
