Public Notice: Railroad Avenue Groundwater Contamination Superfund Site, West Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa
Third Five-Year Review Completed
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has completed the Third Five-Year Review for the Railroad Avenue Groundwater Contamination Superfund Site. Five-year reviews are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) when hazardous substances remain on-site above levels that permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. Five-year reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the site remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.
This Five-Year Review found that the remedies for Operable Units 1 and 2 are protective of human health and the environment. This Five-Year Review Report was signed Aug. 9, 2021.
EPA keeps site project information and reference materials for the public to read at information repositories. EPA assessed the ability of the public to access its online repository and determined that the local community has this ability.
