Public Notice: Madison County Mines Superfund Site – Operable Unit 4, Madison County, Missouri
EPA Signs Explanation of Significant Differences
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has issued an Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) for the Madison County Mines Superfund Site, Operable Unit 4 – Conrad Tailings. Under the Superfund law, EPA issues an ESD for a site cleanup change that differs from the original decision document, but does not alter the overall remedy.
EPA and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources have determined to forego the installation of shallow monitoring wells around the capped and closed repository. Instead, periodic monitoring of nearby domestic wells will be conducted by the agencies to verify that mine waste and lead-contaminated residential soil in the repository is not affecting deeper potable groundwater resources in the vicinity.
EPA keeps site project information and reference materials for the public to read at information repositories. EPA assessed the ability of the public to access its online repository and determined that the local community has this ability. To review the proposed ESD and other cleanup documents for this site, please visit EPA’s Site Profile Page (see Site Documents & Data).
