Public Notice: Anaconda Co. Smelter Superfund Site, Proposed Plan

EPA is requesting comments from the public on a proposed plan for cleanup of the Anaconda Regional Water, Waste and Soils Operable Unit (OU4) of the Anaconda Co. Smelter Superfund site.

The plan proposes to modify the remedy for OU4 that EPA selected in 1998 and modified in 2011 by:
  • Waiving the State of Montana’s acute and aquatic life surface water criteria for cadmium, copper, lead and zinc for upper Willow Creek and its tributaries and the tributaries of upper Mill Creek;
  • Maintaining federal water quality criteria as the applicable surface water standard; and
  • Expanding and enhancing the current upland remedies to minimize source contamination to surface waters that would result in exceedances of water quality standards.
