DALLAS – (Jan. 8, 2018) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded $71,430 to the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) to support assessment and management of contaminated sites. The grant is given under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, commonly known as the Superfund program.

“Supporting cleanups in Arkansas benefits communities and the environment,” said Regional Administrator Anne Idsal. “The Superfund program allows EPA and states to fulfill one of our most basic priorities of restoring contaminated land.”

The funds will help ADEQ conduct preliminary assessments and site investigations and support management and cleanup activities at potential Superfund sites, as well as sites already on the National Priorities List. The administrative, programmatic and financial management functions funded by this grant ensure ADEQ continues to clean up contaminated sites found to pose hazards to human health.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund, was enacted by Congress on December 11, 1980. The law regulates closed and abandoned hazardous waste sites and provides liability to those responsible for such sites. It also authorizes cleanups of contaminated sites, included those on the National Priorities List.
