Investigative Careers

Become an EPA OIG Special Agent

EPA OIG special agents are entrusted to perform criminal and civil/administrative investigations involving companies, persons and property affiliated with the EPA pursuant to federal statutes. As a special agent in the Office of Investigations, you will:

  • Plan, organize, and conduct complex and sensitive investigations relating to violations of criminal and civil law, and administrative regulations.
  • Perform special investigative projects.
  • Interview witnesses and subjects, administer oaths, provide constitutional rights warnings when necessary, obtain statements, and carry firearms in the performance of official duties.
  • Make arrests and execute search and seizure warrants.
  • Work closely with other personnel within the OIG, EPA, law enforcement organizations, and professional business community in investigating and resolving allegations of criminal, civil, and administrative misconduct.

General Qualification requirements

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be between the ages of 21 and 37 (maximum entry age requirement may be waived for applicants eligible for veteran's preference)
  • Pass the complete applicant screening process, which includes an interview battery, drug screening, medical examination, and a physical readiness test
  • Pass an extensive background investigation
  • Successfully complete and pass the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Criminal Investigator Training Program or an equivalent and recognized federal law enforcement training program (such as the FBI Academy; Drug Enforcement Agency Basic Agent Training; BIT from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which is certified through FLETA).
