Disinfectant Products for Claims Against Ebola Virus

EPA has reviewed required laboratory testing data demonstrating that these products kill Ebola virus.

Products on EPA’s Registered Antimicrobial Products Effective Against Ebola Virus [List L]

On October 6, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an emergency response to an outbreak of Ebola virus in western Uganda. EPA recognized that this outbreak created a need for disinfection against Ebola virus beyond what was anticipated including potential supply chain issues to ensure that the few products registered for use against Ebola virus remained readily available to respond to the need. As a result, the Emerging Viral Pathogens (EVP) guidance was activated for the Ebola virus in 2022. See the emerging viral pathogens status page for up to date information on activation for the guidance for Ebola virus. If a product on EPA’s Registered Antimicrobial Products Effective Against Ebola Virus [List L] cannot be found, please use a Tier 1 product on Disinfectants for Emerging Viral Pathogens (EVPs) [List Q].

For situations involving outbreaks of emerging viral pathogens, which can include existing viruses that are rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range, EPA has developed its Emerging Viral Pathogens (EVP) guidance to facilitate the availability of EPA-registered disinfectants for use against those pathogens. In support of CDC’s response to the current Ebola virus outbreak, EPA triggered the EVP guidance for application to the Ebola virus so that additional disinfectants for which emerging viral pathogen claims have been approved can be used against the Ebola virus.

Additional information is provided below.

How to Use Products on this List Effectively

A product’s effectiveness can change depending on how you use it. Disinfectants may have different directions for different pathogens. Follow the label directions for Ebola virus carefully including the contact time.

  • The contact time is the time the product must be applied to the surface for it to be effective.

How to Check if a Product is on EPA’s Registered Antimicrobial Products Effective Against Ebola Virus [List L]

Disinfectant products may be marketed and sold under different brand and product names. To determine whether EPA expects a given product to kill the Ebola virus, check whether its registration is on this list.

  • First, find the EPA registration number on the product label. Look for “EPA Reg. No.” followed by two, as described on the List Landing Page.
  • Supplemental distributer products are not included in the lists. For example, if EPA Reg. No. 12345-12 is on the lists, you can buy EPA Reg. No. 12345-12-2567 and know you’re getting an equivalent product.
  • On the product list, search the registration number exactly as it appears on the label.
  • Once you see the results on the product list, make sure to check that the product's label includes directions for use as a disinfectant product against Ebola virus under Use Directions for Disinfection.
    • Regardless of whether you are using a primary registration product or a supplemental distributor product, always check the label has the corresponding directions for use for the relevant pathogen.
