Innovative EPA partnership in Montana enlists citizens to help reduce algae blooms in the Smith River
An EPA grant is helping scientists and resource managers at the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks address a persistent algae problem in the Smith River, a world-class recreational destination and trout fishery. The innovative project will develop a mobile app for citizens to use to capture data and collect photos of excess algae growth during the 2018 recreation season. These citizen scientists will use the app to provide valuable information that state and local groups can use to assess causes and guide solutions.
