East Helena Montana Celebrates a Restored Creek
September 22, 2016 – EPA and the Montana Environmental Trust Group invited the community of East Helena and partners to celebrate the completion of the Prickly Pear Creek Realignment Project and tour the new creek channel.
After years of planning and construction, including the excavation of more than 1 million cubic yards of material, Prickly Pear Creek is now flowing in a new, 1½-mile-long reconstructed channel and floodplain.
“This project is one of several cleanup measures designed to address contamination in soils and groundwater at the former Asarco Smelter in East Helena,” said Betsy Burns, EPA Remedial Project Manager. “Now, the channel and one hundred acres of new floodplain exists that provides riparian habitat and flood storage capacity at the site.”
