Smart Growth

Best Development Practices: A Primer for Smart Growth

Best Development Practices: A Primer for Smart Growth (1998), by Reid Ewing with Robert Hodder, published by the Smart Growth Network under a grant from EPA, lists specific practices to help achieve cross-cutting development principles, including:

  • Mix land uses and concentrate development.
  • Disperse and calm traffic and support alternative modes.
  • Preserve entire ecosystems and mimic nature.
  • Mix housing types and cut housing costs.
The publication is a condensation of principles and practices from Best Development Practices, a book prepared originally prepared for Florida’s Department of Community Affairs and updated for the American Planning Association and the Urban Land Institute. While conceived of for "greenfield" sites, best practices in this primer could be useful to assess existing development or guide redevelopment plans.
