Public Notice: Smithfield Hog Production dba Murphy Brown LLC, Yuma County, Colorado, Draft Permit No. CO52205-00000
Project Background Information: Smithfield Hog Production, dba Murphy Brown LLC, in Yuma County, Colorado, has been operating nine drinking water treatment systems that include arsenic filtration units to remove arsenic from the source water to meet the arsenic drinking water standard. The source water is groundwater from the Ogallala aquifer. These filtration units must be backwashed periodically. In May 2011, EPA issued a Class V UIC Area Permit allowing Smithfield to dispose of the backwash water into septic systems at the nine locations. The arsenic concentration in the backwash water is below the arsenic drinking water standard of 0.01 mg/L. The septic systems discharge effluent through leachfields into soil overlying the Ogallala aquifer.
Proposed Action: EPA proposes issuing a second Class V UIC Area Permit that will allow disposal of the arsenic filter backwash water into nine new Class V wells, instead of the septic systems, to continue for a period of 10 years.
