Region 7 On-Scene Coordinators Paul Doherty and Joe Davis worked with the Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department and Kansas City HazMat crews to conduct air monitoring the morning of Nov. 30, after a tanker truck overturned and began leaking hydrochloric acid on Interstate 35 at the Paseo Bridge over the Missouri River. Doherty and Davis worked with contractors to sample at 25 locations east and north of the accident site using a variety of methods and equipment throughout the morning. All sampling results were below method detection limits. The HazMat crews' immediate priorities were to dike the liquid material and prevent exposure to the vapors.
