Public Notice: EPA Begins Five-Year Review of LaSalle Electrical Utilities Site
Summary
EPA is conducting its sixth five-year review of the LaSalle Electrical Utilities Superfund site in LaSalle, Illinois. Illinois EPA leads the site management. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. A summary of the cleanup activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the implemented cleanup remedies will be included in the five-year review report.
Cleanup actions included removal and on-site treatment of PCB-contaminated soil, building demolition and destruction, groundwater treatment, the installation of soil vapor extraction system, phytoremediation, and property use restrictions.
Illinois EPA is in the process of re-evaluating the groundwater remedy after the groundwater treatment building was flooded in 2011, compromising the integrity of the treatment system.
The five-year review is an opportunity for you to tell the EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have. The review is expected to be completed in August 2024.
