Public Notice: Fort Wayne Reduction Dump: Five-Year Review in Progress
Summary
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the Fort Wayne Reduction Dump Superfund site in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This site is located along the south bank of the Maumee River, approximately one mile east of the intersection with U.S. Highway 30. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site.
EPA’s cleanup of the Fort Wayne Reduction Dump Superfund site included:
- the removal of thousands of drums containing waste
- collecting, treating, and monitoring groundwater
- nstalling erosion mats and planting vegetation to reduce erosion during flooding - installing a fence
- placing deed restrictions on land use
In 2008, EPA, in consultation with the State of Indiana, determined that that groundwater treatment was no longer needed, as the groundwater met the stated cleanup criteria. The previous five-year review in 2019 found that the existing remedies in place throughout the site are protective of human health and the environment.
More information is available at the Allen County Public Library located at 900 Library Plaza in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and at Fort Wayne Reduction Dump Superfund Site web page. The review will be completed by summer 2024.
The five-year-review is an opportunity for you to tell EPA about site conditions and any concerns you have.
