EPA partners with Government of Mexico to bring safe drinking water to Nuevo Laredo

EPA Region 6 Acting Deputy Regional Administrator, Miguel I. Flores, joined the Hon. Eugenio Hernandez Flores, Governor of the Mexican State of Tamaulipas, and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mayor Ramon Garza Barrios, at the inauguration of the city's new wastewater treatment facility.

EPA provided $20 million in grant funds from the Border Environment Infrastructure Fund managed by the North American Development Bank for the $58 million plant. This new treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 13.7 million gallons per day will provide collection and wastewater treatment to almost 100% of  Nuevo Laredo's 355,000 residents and will eliminate the discharge of untreated or partially treated sewage into the Rio Grande.

"There is always a great sense of satisfaction when EPA can partner with the Government of Mexico to bring safe drinking water and sanitation services to our sister cities.  Both countries benefit from this type of investments that lead to the improvement of public health and water quality" said Mr. Flores. "It is indeed a great day for the citizens of Nuevo Laredo, and EPA is pleased to have been a major part of this very significant accomplishment" Flores continued.

EPA had previously invested grant funds in the expansion of Nuevo Laredo's water treatment plant to provide safe drinking water and in the city's first wastewater treatment plant, which began operations in 1996.
