ICMA has released a new publication entitled "Putting Smart Growth to Work in Rural Communities." The publication, which was funded by EPA, describes smart growth strategies that rural communities can use to guide growth while preserving their unique rural character. EPA is currently soliciting proposals for the Climate Showcase Communities Grant Program, which helps local and tribal governments develop plans, conduct demonstrations, and implement projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while achieving additional environmental, economic, public health, and/or community benefits. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is launching a $100 million Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant program to create stronger, more sustainable communities by connecting housing to jobs, fostering local innovation, and building a clean energy economy. The deadline for applications is August 23, 2010. In addition, HUD and the Department of Transportation (DOT) have published a joint Notice of Funding Availability for HUD's Community Challenge Planning Grants and DOT's TIGER II Planning Grants.
