EPA Proposes To Delete Federal Superfund Site Near Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico From The National List of Hazardous Waste Sites

Release Date: 07/29/1998
Contact Information:

(#98092) SAN JUAN, P.R. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency intends to delete the Naval Security Group Activity Superfund site in the Village of Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico from the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites and is seeking public comment on this proposal. The naval base is a high-frequency, direction-finding facility that provides communication and related support to the Department of Defense. It is the only federal facility in Puerto Rico on the NPL.

Federal Superfund activities have been completed at the site, including the demolition of a building that housed a pest control shop and the construction of an asphalt cap over the area to alleviate any local concerns. Federal investigations of four additional areas of suspected hazardous waste contamination found no evidence of a risk to public health and the enviroment.

Deletion from the NPL does not make the site ineligible for later cleanup actions. If proven necessary, additional cleanup can be done without renominating the site to the NPL.

The public is invited to comment on the proposal to delete the Naval Security Group Activity Superfund site from the NPL during a public comment period that will begin on July 30, 1998 and extend for 30 days. Written comments must be postmarked no later than August 29, 1998. Comments on the Naval Security Group Activity Superfund site should be addressed to: Paul Ingrisano, Remedial Project Manager, USEPA, Region 2, Environmental Protection Agency, 290 Broadway, 18th floor, New York, N.Y. 10007-1866. Comprehensive documents and information related to the site and the proposal are available for public review at the Jaime Fonadella Garriga Public Library in Toa Baja, the Naval Security Group Activity Base Library in Building 193 in Sabana Seca and EPA's Region 2 Office in New York City.
