SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education at Slippery Rock University has received a $5,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, mid-Atlantic region, to develop a series of one-day environmental workshops for Pennsylvania school teachers and other educators.

The eight-hour workshops will be offered at four Pennsylvania locations to educate teachers on methods for teaching environmental education and how to apply national and state environmental education related guidelines. The target audience is K-12 classroom teachers and nonformal educators such as wildlife conservation officers and personnel from nature centers, parks, zoos and other organizations with environmental education missions.

The following three workshops are scheduled, and a fourth workshop will be scheduled in May or June 2000 in central Pennsylvania:

October 8 at the Fairmont Park Horticulture Center in Philadelphia.
November 5 at Lake Harmony, Pa. in conjunction with the annual conference of the Pennsylvania Alliance for Environmental Education.
March 10, 2000 at State College, Pa.

"By educating teachers on how to introduce environmental issues in their classrooms, we can increase students’ appreciation of the environment and help the public understand why it’s important to protect public health by preserving a safe environment," said W. Michael McCabe, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic Region, 25 grant recipients included schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $3 million was awarded in 1999.
