EPA Awards $494,935 Public Information Grant to El Paso, Texas

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded the city of El Paso a a $494,935 Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT) grant to fund the Paso del Norte Environmental Monitor.

     "EPA's EMPACT program helps communities across the country provide timely, accurate and understandable environmental information to citizens so that they can make informed decisions about their daily lives. It is extraordinary that so much of the community in and around El Paso is working together to ensure that vital air quality information is available to its citizens and families," EPA Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke said.

     The Paso del Norte Environmental Monitor will provide information on ground level ozone, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, local weather and current traffic conditions to citizens via an Internet site.

     El Paso's EMPACT partnership includes the city of El Paso, the University of El Paso, the National Weather Service, the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission, the Texas Department of Transportation, the New Mexico Environment Department, local organizations and the city of Cuidad Juarez, Mexico.
