The Alaska office of the Environmental Protection Agency will host an open house and public hearing to discuss cruise ships discharges on Friday, September 8 at the Centennial Hall in Juneau.

The open house will be held from Noon to 6:00 pm. The hearing will immediately follow from 7:00 to 10:00 pm.

The meeting, one of three being held around the country, is an effort by the EPA to engage the public on wastewater, solid and hazardous waste discharges that have become the focus of citizen and environmental group complaints and lawsuits.

Marcia Combes, Director of EPA’s Alaska office in Anchorage said, “Wastewater discharges from Cruise Ships are not well understood by the public or the environmental regulatory agencies, especially since the industry's rapid growth in Alaska. This hearing is an early step in closing that gap.”

The open house will feature displays and an opportunity for the public and representatives from various agencies to engage in informal discussions. Following formal presentations, members of the public will be invited to present oral testimony. Comments provided during both the open house and the hearing will be made part of the official public record.
