EPA Takes Brooklyn 3rd Graders On Internet Tour Of Earth; Earth Day Brings 5 Computers and EPA Head To P.S. 99

(#99066) NEW YORK, N.Y. -- In celebration of Earth Day, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Jeanne M.. Fox today brought 5 computers to students at P.S. 99 in the Midwood section of Brooklyn . She demonstrated EPA's new interactive website for kids (www.epa.gov/kids) to a class of third graders in the school computer room. Together, the children and Ms. Fox surfed pages of the kids site including a mission to save the Earth from trash and pollution, Recycletown a make-believe town where everyone reuses their waste, and the environmental artwork of other children posted on the site.

The students completed their interactive journey with Ms. Fox by singing "Happy Earth Day To You."

"It was delightful to spend Earth Day with the young people at P.S. 99," said Ms. Fox. "The students were computer experts, and enjoyed exploring the meaning of Earth Day by surfing through EPA's new, colorful and interactive website for kids. I would strongly encourage all teachers with school access to the Internet to explore the site with their students to see how easy EPA has made learning about the environment."

The computers were donated to P.S. 99 by EPA as part of President Clinton's 1996 Executive Order encouraging federal agencies to make a contribution to America's children by donating excess computers to elementary and secondary schools in need.

This year marked the 29th anniversary of the first Earth Day, which occurred in 1970. The Environmental Protection Agency encourages individuals, schools, organizations, and corporations to celebrate Earth Day by taking stock of the natural resources the Earth affords us, and working to reduce waste and recycle whenever possible.
