ATLANTA (Oct. 29, 2018) – In honor of Children’s Health Month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the award of a $20,000 grant to the Mission Healthcare Foundation Inc., in Asheville, N.C. The goal of the grant is to reduce asthma triggers among patients in Western North Carolina by providing training for asthma diagnosis treatment and management during home visits.

Asthma is a public health issue that impacts people from all communities and socioeconomic backgrounds. This grant will give training and educational resources for health professionals to help deliver solutions for those who battle this disease in Western North Carolina,” said EPA Region 4 Administrator Trey Glenn.

Asthma is a serious, sometimes life-threatening chronic respiratory disease that affects the quality of life for more than 23 million Americans, including an estimated 6 million children. Although there is no cure for asthma yet, asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers. EPA is committed to educating all Americans about asthma so that everyone knows:

  • What asthma is;
  • How the environment can affect asthma patients; and
  • How to manage environmental asthma triggers.
