EPA proposes St. Regis Paper Co. Cleanup Plan; accepting comments
CHICAGO (March 30, 2016) -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is issuing a proposed plan to clean up soil contamination in the residential areas at the St. Regis Paper Co. site on the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation.
EPA will hold an information session to further explain this proposed cleanup and a public meeting to provide an opportunity for public comment. The meetings will begin at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at Cass Lake-Bena Elementary School, 154th St. NW. Between March 28 and May 27, EPA will accept public comments on the proposed plan, available for review at: www.epa.gov/superfund/st-regis-paper
The Agency will make its proposal final only after reviewing all comments, which can be submitted as follows:

At EPA's public meeting, Saturday, April 9. After a brief presentation, EPA officials will hold a public hearing to accept comments on the proposed cleanup plan. A court reporter will record all public comments.

EPA's recommended cleanup plan includes removing contaminated soil from affected residential areas and replacing it with clean soil. Most of the soil will be managed and monitored at an on-site facility. A small amount of heavily contaminated soil may require disposal at an off-site facility.
