EPA STATEMENT ON KEWAUNEE COUNTY DRINKING WATER PROGRAM
For Immediate Release No. 16-OPA037
Peninsula Pride Farms’ Water Well program will provide short-term relief to Kewaunee County residents affected by E. coli contaminated private drinking water wells, regardless of the source of E. coli. EPA encouraged discussions between state and local agencies and Peninsula Pride Farms to improve public health.
“EPA is pleased that Peninsula Pride Farms’ Water Well program will provide short-term relief to Kewaunee County residents affected by E. coli contaminated drinking water wells,” said acting EPA Region 5 Administrator Robert Kaplan. “We have worked closely with Sen. Tammy Baldwin to keep all the parties focused on ensuring people have access to safe drinking water.”
This voluntary action is an important step toward fulfilling the recommendations made in Wisconsin DNR’s June 2016 Groundwater Collaboration Workgroup Final Report. In June, the Final Report was made publicly available and was presented at a public meeting hosted by Wisconsin DNR.
EPA will continue working with Peninsula Pride Farms, interested citizens, and state and local agencies on other efforts to implement recommendations from the final report. EPA will continue to monitor developments in Kewaunee County and take any necessary enforcement actions in order to ensure protection of public health.
