THURSDAY: EPA to Hold a Public Meeting About the Cleanup of Cavenham Forest Industries Site in Gulfport
ATLANTA - Gulfport residents are invited to attend a public meeting about the ongoing cleanup of the Cavenham Forest Industries (CFI) facility. CFI is a former wood treating plant that closed in 1987 after operating for over 80 years at 9502 Creosote Rd. in Gulfport, bordering Turkey creek, Bernard Bayou and Rippy Road-Airport Road. As a result of manufacturing, the CFI property has soils and groundwater that are polluted by creosote, pentachlorophenol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins and petroleum products, such as diesel fuel.
Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and CFI will present information about progress the company has made in investigating and cleaning up contaminated soil, sediment and groundwater, along with its effort to restore the site. Human health risks from fish consumption and exposure to sediment or surface water will also be covered. Residents will be able to get their questions answered.
