Public Notice: Newton County Wells Superfund Site, Joplin, Newton County, Missouri
Summary
Third Five-Year Review Completed
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has completed the Third Five-Year Review for the Newton County Wells Superfund Site. Five-Year Reviews are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, when hazardous substances remain on-site above levels that permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure.
Five-Year Reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the site remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.
This Five-Year Review found that the remedy at the site is protective of human health and the environment in the short term. Most of the contaminated soil at the site has been addressed through excavation and in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) injections. Institutional controls (ICs) are in place to restrict the installation of domestic wells into the contaminated portions of the shallow groundwater and the Mississippian Aquifer.
To be protective in the long term, vapor intrusion sampling must be conducted at the downgradient residential properties. This Five-Year Review Report was signed March 29, 2024.
Site project information, including the Five-Year Review, is available to the public at web repositories. To view cleanup documents, please visit EPA’s Site Profile page (see Site Documents & Data).
