Public Notice: Washington County Lead District – Furnace Creek National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site, Washington County, Missouri
Summary
First Five-Year Review Completed
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has completed the First Five-Year Review (FYR) of the cleanup remedy at the Washington County Lead District – Furnace Creek National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site (site). FYRs are required by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as Superfund, when hazardous substances remain on-site above levels that permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. FYRs provide an opportunity to evaluate the site’s cleanup decision (remedy) to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment.
This FYR found that the remedy at Operable Unit 1 (OU1) is expected to be protective of human health and the environment upon completion. In the interim, remedial activities at residential properties completed to date have adequately addressed the soil exposure pathways that could result in unacceptable risk.
Lead is the main contaminant of concern at this site. It is a toxic metal that is harmful if inhaled or ingested and can pose serious health risks, particularly to children under 7 years old, as well as pregnant women and nursing mothers. For recent Fact Sheets, visit EPA’s website.
Site project information is available to the public at web repositories. To view cleanup documents, please visit EPA’s Site Profile page (see Site Documents & Data). If you do not have internet access, you can view these documents online at this location:

Annual Childhood Lead Testing
EPA encourages parents and caregivers to have children under 7 years old tested for elevated blood lead levels annually. The only way to know if your child has an elevated blood lead level is to have his or her blood tested; lead-poisoned children do not always look or act sick. Talk to your pediatrician, general physician, Washington County Health Department (520 Purcell Dr., Potosi MO 63664; 573-438-2164), or other health care professionals about testing your child and to arrange for blood lead screening.
